Include YouTube Videos and More on Your Website (the Easy Way!)

Often, you’ll want to include more interesting content on your site than just the text and images you have. Text and images are great for most cases, but when that’s just not enough, multimedia can really explain an idea or drive a point home. The most common form of multimedia on the web today is video, which provides visitors an easy and fast way to absorb information. Video isn’t the only one getting in on the fun! Podcasts, sound bytes, and other forms of audio, video, photo combinations are essential to bringing life to your website, and it’s easier to include than you might think.

Embeds and linking

Chances are, you’re using other online systems besides just your website to get your company or organizations message out. Most commonly, Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube are perfect complements to the information on your site. Taking the videos, posts, and other content you’ve already created or hosted on other systems is easy to include on your posts and pages through embedding. When you embed content from another site, it’s like a putting a TV on a wall. The TV is showing a broadcast from somewhere else, without you having to go there. Embeds allow your visitors to see relevant content from other services without ever leaving your site. For example, if you want to drive more engagement on Instagram, sharing an Instagram embed is a great way to show your post while also including a link to your profile and an easy outlet for your visitors to connect with you there. In the case of videos, it’s much better to first upload to YouTube or another video hosting platform and embed the video you want to avoid long load times for your visitors, if you were to upload the video directly to your website.

This sounds complicated…

And truthfully, it used to be! Lots of copying and pasting blocks of code, trying to make them work, etc. It was a bit of a hassle. These days there’s a simple, fool-proof way to embed almost any content to your site.

oEmbed to the rescue!

oEmbed is a system built in to WordPress (which means built in to your Plexamedia website!) that allows you to copy and paste a link to a growing list of websites, and see an embed appear automagically. For example, pasting just the URL for a YouTube video (example: https://youtu.be/gt1V61SPI_w) into a post or page will automatically transform into an embedded video, like this! The best part is that it’s not just for YouTube and other video services. The following is a complete list (as of writing) of all services that will oEmbed upon copy/pasting a link to their site:
  • Animoto
  • Blip
  • Cloudup
  • CollegeHumor
  • DailyMotion
  • Facebook
  • Flickr
  • FunnyOrDie.com
  • Hulu
  • Imgur
